Residual feed intake is used to determine the feed efficiency of an animal. RFI is the amount of feed an animal eats compared to what that animal should eat for maintenance and growth. Cattle with low RFI values are more efficient than those with high RFI values. The fact that RFI is considered to be independent of body weight and growth and it’s a moderately heritable trait, means it can readily be used for genetic selection purposes.
